A Very Insightful Article

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/how-school-reform-damages-poor-children--kohn/2011/04/26/AFTTCbtE_blog.html

I read the above article this morning and was truly saddened (again) by how incredibly screwed up education is for urban youth. Reading that article made me realize how the lack of quality education is a serious civil rights issue that is currently segregating students of poverty in our country. I continue to question: Will the rich always be rich? But more specifically, will America continue to oppress people of color with its lack of educational opportunities for all students. If education is the key to success, we, as a country, need to examine how education is presented to all students, not just the wealthier, whiter ones. More rants later. Thanks for listening.

  1. I believe we are in a particular point in the cycle - a harsh, conservative mentality that demands those without boots to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I also believe that this cycle turns and, eventually, a more reasoned, compassionate approach has to evolve - or else our public education system is doomed and education will only be for the rich and the chosen, not for all. I find myself returning, again and again, to the works of Paulo Freire for guidance and insight. If the Christies and Rhees of our world are able to push their ideas throughout the country then I will find another way to do what I know should be done. The pedagogy of hope.
